Savage Kingdom
If Game of Thrones took place in the depths of Africa and followed the struggles of its wildlife, it would be Savage Kingdom. This second screen experience allowed users to navigate the Kingdom's landscape using specie-specific shields to relive fierce conflicts and suspenseful hunts. These shields needed to speak to the culture of the region as well as the personality of each specie's clan. Through researching materials, designs, and colors appropriate, these were brought all the way from sketches to completed 3D webGL models. This was a Neo-Pangea project. My role involved asset creation, illustration, and some small pieces of art direction and page design.
Designing across dimenions
I was charged with designing shields reminiscent of their respective clans' heritage and culture. These were then, in turn, converted into 3D models from an outside source. I helped provide art direction during this process.
Initial directions
We wanted to offer shields as a primary clan icon, but also wanted to pitch a floating, glowing buckler shield or coin. In the initial mood research we discovered many old coin designs that fit the theme of the show and site, and wanted to run it by the client. While the client didn't decide on using the coins as a primary means of navigation, it was eventually used as a secondary one.
Following the initial feedback from the stakeholders, I was able to move forward on the remaining shield designs. By drawing up digital sketches of each one and providing references to colors, textures, and motifs, I was able to sell the client on the designs.
Clan Hyena
Fearless, ruthless, bloodthirsty.
Clan Wild Dogs
Pack hunters and nomads without a homeland.
Clan Northern Lions
Rebels from the main Lion clan. Exiled to the north.
Clan Leopard
Agile, stealthy, cunning.
Clan Marsh Lion
The original Lion clan. Brutal, ferocious, and in control of the Kingdom's most bountiful hunting grounds.
Hunt and Conflict
We used the initial coin idea for secondary navigation around the site's 3D map, using them as landmarks of where internal and external conflicts erupted or where a clan's hunt took place. By interacting with these coins, users were able to relive pivotal moments of the show.
